The southern periphery of Bath is to many a kind of ‘bypass’. That is why recently the council placed a weight restriction on the route to stop HGVs using it.

Yet the route which encompasses…

  • Whiteway Road
  • Rush Hill
  • Frome Road
  • Bradford Road
  • North Road
  • Claverton Down Road
  • Wellsway

…is a largely a residential neighbourhood. It generally has buildings each side, and many of these are schools. Along this route are:

  • Roundhill Primary School
  • Bath Community Academy site
  • St Philip’s Primary School
  • St Martin’s Primary School
  • Threeways School
  • Ralph Allen School
  • Prior Park College
  • St Gregory’s College

Children need safe routes for at least 500 meters from the gate, especially in the case of primary schools that have overwhelmingly very local catchments. By the end of 2026, that will be the case for all schools in BA1.

And this is just the schools. Factor in other destinations such as Haycombe Cemetery, GP surgeries, dentists, shops… this is a road that should be safe for people, because it is used intensively by people who live in the area. Instead, we have a wall of traffic that at times divides the community.

For all the reasons already outlined on the homepage, this route needs slowing down to a more liveable speed.
