Schools of Southern Bath Fringe
The southern periphery of Bath is to many a kind of ‘bypass’. That is why recently the council placed a weight restriction on the route to stop HGVs using it.
Yet the route which encompasses Whiteway Road, Rush Hill, Frome Road, Bradford Road, North Road and Claverton Down Road is a largely a residential neighbourhood. It generally has buildings each side, and several of these are schools. Along or close to this route are:
- Roundhill Primary School
- Bath Community Academy site
- St Philip’s Primary School
- St Martin’s Primary School
- Threeways School
- Combe Down Primary
- Monkton Combe Prep School
- Ralph Allen School
- Prior Park College
- St Gregory’s College
A selection of the schools with 30mph on their doorstep. At several, the internal speed limit is 5mph. Quite a difference.
In fact there are so many schools on this route it has been named the ‘Scholars Way’ with significant investment in connecting the schools. But the basic plank of safe systems (see homepage) has not been delivered yet: safe speeds.
Children need safe routes (and speeds) for at least 500 meters from the gate, especially in the case of primary schools that have overwhelmingly very local catchments. By the end of 2026, that will be the case for all schools in BA1.
Once you factor in all the other local destinations such as Haycombe Cemetery, GP surgeries, dentists, shops… it is clear this is a road that should be safe for people, because it is used intensively by people who live in the area. Instead, we have a wall of traffic that at times divides the community.
For all the reasons already outlined on the homepage, this route needs slowing down to a more liveable speed.
